The elderly population is increasing all over the world. Elderly people have special needs, which are usually related to the change associated with the aging process. Relocation of the elderly person in residential homes is a stressful event that requires adjustment and coping. Mal-adaptation to either the aging process or the institutional environment leads to low self-esteem, depression, loneliness, and social isolation. Participation in social interaction reduces isolation and increases the level of self-esteem and acceptance. Recreational and leisure activities are recommended and used as a form of treatment to improve physical, mental, and emotional well being of the residents in the institution. This book should be useful for health team member, family caregiver, and community member.

Landslide hazards have in the last 10 years become more prominent on the Mt. Elgon ecosystem in Uganda often culminating into disasters. The community was assessed on their vulnerability to landslide hazards and the efficacy of existing institutional mechanisms in resilience and disaster risk reduction. Household interviews were conducted on 255 respondents using pretested questionnaire. Household interviews were enriched with Focused Group Discussions and Key Informant Interviews. Information on elements at risk to landslides was mapped using GIS technique. Vulnerability to landslides was determined using combined results of the thirteen weighted indicators and five weighting scores. Communities in the study area are highly vulnerable to landslide hazards (64%). Predominant implemented coping mechanisms to landslides at household level were afforestation (57%) and relocation (28%). Institutional structures at policy level and community level were found to be weak. Willingness of community members to be moved to safe area is mainly determined by the size of land. Education level and monthly income are the major determinants for the adoption strategies to reduce landslide risk.

The Business of Transatlantic Migration between...

This is the first systematic examination of the business of mass migration travel across the North Atlantic during the period of unprecedented globalization prior to World War I. It explicates the reinforcing interests and actions of the oceanic shipping lines, their migrant customers, and contemporary government authorities, in coping with the substantial risks of mass physical relocation, particularly those due to cyclical economic recessions, and in keeping migration safe, smooth and largely self-regulated. In a comprehensive analysis backed up by extensive and consistent statistics, it details the motives and mechanisms by which these eleven million Europe-born migrants made nineteen million ocean crossings on eighteen thousand voyages of several hundred large steamships, generating hundreds of millions of dollars in revenues for these steamship lines during the pivotal peak years of early twentieth century migration between Europe and America, and it describes how this long-lived long-distance travel business operated as the crucial common denominator of the greatest and most ethnically diverse mass transoceanic relocation ever.

Coping with change

Very little research has been conducted in Australia on how the transition to secondary school is perceived by young adolescents. Similarly there is a paucity of literature on the effects of relocation and the concept of homesickness. These issues were explored by comparing day students with boarders in a longitudinal study of 74 students in their first year of secondary and boarding school in a rural remote town in North Queensland. Findings indicated that most of the students perceived that they had adapted well, with emphases on peer interactions and school work. Positive identification with home, school and self contributed to adjustment, whilst there were associations among measures of depression, homesickness and coping which were also related to negative perceptions of family and/or school contexts and perceived adaptation. Homesickness was identified as a distinct phenomenon, which could be discriminated from, but also include, depressive symptomatology. Homesickness is explained as a normative adaptive developmental process of place identity, which if protracted, can impede positive identification with the school setting and adjustment.

The forced relocation of fifteen thousand Cherokee to Oklahoma nearly two centuries ago left them in a foreign landscape. Coping with loss and new economic challenges, the Cherokee united under a new constitution and exploited the Victorian affinity for decorative crafts. Cherokee women had always created patterned baskets for everyday use and trade, and soon their practical work became lucrative items of beauty. Adapting the tradition to the new land, the industrious weavers transformed Oklahoma's vast natural resources into art that aided their survival. The Civil War found the Cherokee again in jeopardy, but resilient, they persevered and still thrive today. Author and Cherokee citizen Karen Coody Cooper presents the story of this beautiful legacy.
